The University of Illinois Philosophy Department is thrilled to announce that Professor Stephen Finlay, an internationally prominent philosopher and one of the department’s most accomplished PhD graduates, has accepted a senior offer to join the faculty, where he will begin in residence in January of 2026. Finlay, who previously served as Professor at the University of Southern California (ranked #6 in the nation) and as Director of the prestigious Dianoia Institute of Philosophy in Melbourne, Australia, brings a wealth of expertise and experience back to his intellectual launching pad, joining a world class faculty that has been undergoing a transformative resurgence.

This hire marks another milestone in the department’s extraordinary recent trajectory. Over the past two years, the University of Illinois has welcomed five major philosophical talents (Luvell Anderson, Verena Erlenbusch-Anderson, Alison Duncan Kerr, Kevin Scharp, and John Schwenkler), revitalizing the program and helping propel it back into the national rankings. These high-profile appointments have not only elevated the department’s academic reputation but have also fostered a dynamic, world-class culture that continues to attract top scholars and students alike. Finlay’s return amplifies this momentum, weaving another strand into the rich tapestry of a program that seeks to redefine excellence. "This hire should bring the department into the national top 40, by any reasonable estimation," said Rob Kar, Head of the Philosophy Department and co-editor of the Philosophical Gourmet Report.

“We are delighted to welcome Steve back to Illinois,” Kar continued. “His remarkable achievements as a philosopher and leader, combined with his deep connection to our program, make this a truly special moment. Alongside our exceptional faculty, Steve's return strengthens our commitment to pushing the boundaries of philosophical inquiry while building on the vibrant intellectual climate we’ve already cultivated.”

Finlay’s career has been marked by significant contributions to metaethics, moral philosophy, moral psychology, and the philosophy of language, earning him international recognition. His tenure at USC and leadership of the Dianoia Institute underscore his ability to bridge cutting-edge research with institutional vision. Now, as he rejoins the University of Illinois, Finlay brings not only his scholarly distinction but also a unique perspective as an alumnus eager to give back to the department that launched his career.

Finlay joins a roster of world-class faculty whose collective efforts have recently redefined the program’s internal dynamics and solidified its reputation as a hub of philosophical excellence. Together, they help shape the future of the discipline while honoring the legacy of Illinois as a place where big ideas take root.
