Illinois Philosophy is seeking an assistant/associate/full professor of philosophy to join our distinguished faculty.  Philosophy is one of the oldest departments on campus, celebrating its 132d year in 2024. The Department of Philosophy is home to 16 core and 12 affiliated faculty. We seek to pursue research and scholarship that advances knowledge and understanding across a wide range of philosophical disciplines. We educate undergraduates with a rich curriculum that prepares them for a wide range of careers and graduate studies; helps make them more effective citizens; and teaches them to think clearly, creatively, rigorously, and with great flexibility, so they can adapt easily to a rapidly changing world. We train emerging philosophers through a vibrant graduate program.  We seek—throughout all these activities—to ensure that philosophy serves as a critical, constructive hub for foundational thinking that connects many disciplines.

Successful candidates with interests at the intersection of philosophy and AI/technology will be expected to contribute to the new Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Philosophy, seated in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Target start date: August 16, 2025. Qualifications: Ph.D in philosophy or a related discipline and evidence of ability to contribute significantly to the department and discipline through research, teaching, service, leadership, and public engagement.  Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a promising research agenda and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Applicants at the Associate/Full Professor level must have an established record in research, teaching, and service. 

Duties: normally, two courses per semester (one introductory or intermediate and one advanced); independent study and thesis supervision; the establishment and maintenance of an active and independent research program; committee assignments; and related service, leadership and public engagement activities as needed. Salary: The budgeted salary range for the position is $75-80,000 at the Assistant Professor level; $85-95,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $100-120,000 at the Full Professor level, for a 9-month service basis.
